Very much a matter of choice here. I have a Mk1 with 948 Engine and it's fine for occasional use. I guess it depends on what you are proposing to use the car for. As you are probably aware it sounds like it has already got a later (Rib case) gearbox fitted. Not unusual to find Engine and Gearbox swops from A35's, A40's and Minors etc. If you decide to fit a 1275 you should change the front brakes to disc set up too!
So long as you enjoy using the car that's the main thing. These early cars will never be practical for everyday use in today's traffic and on Motorways but I can't help smiling when I'm out round the lanes in mine!
